Obra nominada al Premio Bartolomé Hidalgo
Con gran alegría les contamos que el volumen 1 de Historia de la asistencia del parto y el nacimiento, del Dr. José Enrique Pons, fue nominado por la Cámara Uruguaya del Libro al Premio Bartolomé Hidalgo en la categoría «divulgación académica» (período 2020-2022). La nominación fue anunciada en la ceremonia de inauguración de la 44.a Feria Internacional del Libro de Montevideo.
Esta obra se centra en el parto, la parturienta y el nacimiento. La intención del autor —condicionado por su profesión— toma como eje los criterios «técnicos» que se han escalonado —no siempre en sentido ascendente— en la asistencia obstétrica. Pero, sabedor del importante peso de lo sociocultural e ideológico, se detiene en su análisis para enmarcar lo propiamente profesional-práctico. Este primer volumen abarca desde la prehistoria hasta la caída del Imperio romano de Occidente. Analiza también culturas de otras latitudes, menos conocidas pero no menos importantes para el historiador de la medicina en general y de la obstetricia en particular.
José Enrique Pons es médico especialista en ginecología y obstetricia. Es miembro titular de la Academia Nacional de Medicina, la cual presidió. Fue profesor titular de Ginecotocología de la Facultad de Medicina (Universidad de la República) y sigue vinculado a la docencia en esa facultad. Ha dedicado gran parte de su actividad a la ginecología de niñas y adolescentes, lo que le ha valido reconocimiento internacional.
Presidió la Sociedad Ginecotocológica del Uruguay y otras cuatro sociedades científicas nacionales. Es miembro de la Sociedad Uruguaya de Historia de la Medicina, la cual también presidió. Es autor de libros y artículos de investigación histórico-médica y de divulgación. Ha dictado conferencias en América Latina, Europa, África, Asia y Estados Unidos. Por todo esto ha recibido títulos honoríficos de sociedades científicas nacionales y extranjeras.
